Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that has been the gold standard for treating spider veins and small varicose veins for over 80 years. A sclerosant solution is injected directly into the unwanted vein using an ultra-fine needle, causing inflammation of the vessel wall, closure, and gradual disappearance over the following weeks.

What Can Sclerotherapy Treat?

  • Spider veins (Telangiectasias): Red or blue vessels less than 1 mm in diameter, visible just beneath the skin
  • Reticular veins: Blue-green "feeder" veins, 1–3 mm in diameter
  • Small varicose veins: Bulging veins up to 3 mm not suitable for laser ablation

The Sclerosant Agent

Dr. Haggag uses Polidocanol (Aethoxysklerol), a highly effective and well-tolerated sclerosant with an excellent safety profile. It can be used as a liquid for small vessels or as a foam (Tessari technique) for larger veins, where the foam displaces blood and maximizes contact with the vessel wall.

The Procedure

  1. The skin is cleaned and the targeted veins are mapped
  2. Ultra-fine needles inject the sclerosant precisely into each vessel
  3. Light pressure and gentle massage are applied
  4. Compression stockings are applied immediately after
  5. The patient walks out and resumes normal activities immediately

✅ Results Timeline

Smaller spider veins begin to fade within 2–4 weeks. Larger reticular veins may take 4–8 weeks. Most patients need 2–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for optimal results.

After Your Session

  • Wear compression stockings for 2 weeks post-treatment
  • Avoid direct sun exposure to treated areas for 2 weeks
  • Mild bruising and temporary redness at injection sites are normal
  • Return to all activities, including work, on the same day

⚠️ When Sclerotherapy Is Not Suitable

Sclerotherapy is not performed during pregnancy, in patients with severe arterial disease in the treated limb, or in cases of active deep vein thrombosis. Always have a full vascular assessment first.
